This is the new mural on the back wall of the Lakeside Heritage Society (LHS) Archives, 210 Walnut Avenue, facing The Fountain Inn parking lot. Current LHS President Kathy Venema went over the project at the Heritage Society’s annual member meeting in Orchestra Hall on August 18, 2024.

As Kathy explained, LHS Librarian Laurie Switzer had a friend, Jo Hackett, who was looking for ways to invest, so Laurie and Kathy suggested that they’d really like to get rid of the blank wall on the back wall of the Archives at the Fountain Inn lot. Kathy and Laurie spent time with Jo, investigating what she would want and what Jo likes about Lakeside. Kathy then contracted with Beth Sage of Sagebrush Artistry, who also did the mayfly mural and the new Rhein Center boards celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary.

Beth came up with the basic design. Kathy went to the Lakeside Historic Preservation & Design and Review Board and got that approved. After a delay, Beth began work at the end of July.

The “ugly upper right corner” near the wires will be painted over later when power is temporarily turned off for the safety of the artist. After that, Kathy explained, when it’s all done, Beth will come back and put a seal on it to maintain it better.
