The Lakeside Heritage Society maintains the Heritage Archives in the former Shade Tree store, one block east of the Heritage Hall Museum, at 210 Walnut Avenue.  The Heritage Archives contain print documents and photographs about Lakeside, Danbury Township, the Marblehead Peninsula, and the American Chautauqua Movement, from 1870 to the present.

The Heritage Archives are open by appointment year-round to the public for personal and academic study, and will respond to information requests received in person, by telephone, US mail, or email.


Services

LHS provides the following services:
  • Hosts approximately 3,500 yearly visitors at the Heritage Hall Museum
  • Schedules Lakeside outdoor tours and inside Museum tours. Takes appointments in the Archives during the off-season
  • Provides merchandise for sale in the Museum Gift Shop and online
  • Publishes books on various topics of interest
  • Accepts artifact donations to the Museum and Archives collection
  • Processes information requests received in person, by telephone, U.S. mail, or email
  • Assists researchers conducting academic or personal research at the Archives Center on various topics

Collections

The Archives contain research materials about Lakeside, Danbury Township, the Marblehead Peninsula, and other historic independent U.S. Chautauquas. The current collection includes the following:

The Lakeside Chautauqua collection:
  • seasonal programs
  • newspapers
  • publications
  • club and society materials
  • directories
  • cottage files that include photographs
  • property transfer records from 1873 onward
  • performers and speakers indexed by date from 1880 onward
  • Lakeside Association historical files

The Marblehead Peninsula collection:
  • newspapers published since 1881: subject and year files from 1875 to the present; obituary index of permanent and summer residents
  • American independent Chautauquas
  • Lakeside Volunteer Fire Department historical files (1905-2013);
  • 10,000+ historic photographs and postcards
  • oral histories, family portfolios, diaries and scrapbooks from the early 1900s
  • Ohio Methodist Conference bulletins
  • hymnals, Sunday School books; temperance and camp meeting song books
  • area transportation history by railroad or boat
  • area maps
  • preservation and remodeling books, including materials received through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Resources
  • genealogical materials published by the Ottawa County Genealogy Society.

The Media collection:
  • slides used for Lakeside presentations
  • audiotapes of sermons delivered by visiting clergy (mostly during the 1980s and 1990s)
  • DVDs of delivered presentations.

The Chautauqua Institution Archives: The Chautauqua Institution Archives is a repository that houses documents and artifacts related to the history of the Chautauqua Institute and the Chautauqua Movement as a whole. Their digital collections include Chautauqua Newspapers (1876-2006) and CLSC Magazines (1880-1914).

The Ohio Obituary Index: Offered by the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museum, this resource is an index to over 3,700,000 Ohio obituaries, death and marriage notices from the 1810s to present day.

Find a Grave:  A collection of memorial, cemetery and grave records from around the world.

Ottawa County Auditor: The Auditor’s site offers searchable public records, including property sale and ownership data. 

The HathiTrust Digital Library:  A non-profit collaborative of academic and research libraries, the HathiTrust Digital Library provides online access to millions of digitized books and other content.

Historical Collections of the Great Lakes, Bowling Green State University:  A collection of historical materials documenting the Great Lakes region and connecting waterways, the HCGL also offers online searchable databases relating to Great Lakes vessels, Lake Erie ports and maritime personnel.

Archives & Library at the Ohio History Center: Part of the Ohio History Connection, this resource offers online collections catalogs for state manuscripts, print and audio-visual material. Also included are links to other online resources for historical research.

Johnson's Island Preservation Society: A resource on the history or Johnson’s Island, including its role as a military prison during the Civil War, this site includes listings of Confederate prisoners of war and Union Guard garrisons, prisoner of war letters, autograph books and cemetery records.

Ottawa County Historical Society: Dedicated to discovering, preserving and celebrating the history of Ottawa County, the OCHS provides information on the various regions of Ottawa County and their individual histories.

Kelleys Island Historical Association:  The KIHA offers a variety of digitized periodicals related to life on Kelley’s Island, as well as transcribed township and village council meeting minutes.

Marblehead Lighthouse Historical Society:  A non-profit formed to preserve the history of the village and lighthouse of Marblehead, this organization’s Keeper’s House Museum offers artifacts, photographs and other materials related to the Marblehead Lighthouse and the surrounding area.
